Situated right on the famous Sixteen Mile Beach, we have the perfect venue with the famous salt pans in front of you and the ocean just behind you. We are well-protected from the wind and rain with our wooden deck which is permanently covered by a white Bedouin tent. Our up-market, but informal style restaurant is perfect for Year end Functions / Office Parties, Birthday Parties, Leisurely lunches / dinners with friends and family, or your dream wedding.

our story

Strandkombuis Restaurant and B&B is situated on the northern border of Yzerfontein. We’ve enjoyed robust growth since our launch in 2001, thanks to the West Coast’s increased popularity among tourists and the demand for wedding venues close to the beach.

Then, on the 7th of June 2017, all of that changed. The massive storm that rocked the Western Cape during that time bludgeoned the 16 Mile Beach (on which we are situated) and wiped away approximately 25 meters of coastal dune.

Unfortunately, our restaurant deck and kitchen, which sat on the dune, was pulled into the ocean. Worst of all, the owner of Strandkombuis, Natie van der Merwe, passed away in August of that year. His presence and guiding hand is sorely missed – not only because of his beautiful character and the example he set in the workplace, but also because of the lives that he touched during his years in Yzerfontein. He truly was a special human being. Luckily, he leaves behind a dedicated team inspired by his loving nature and strong work ethic.

For a while, we believed that this was the end of our dream, but, with the encouragement and support from our families and the wonderful people of Yzerfontein, we realized that all is not lost after all.

A decision was made to start rebuilding the deck, this time behind the dune, on the old parking lot.

While the previous deck and its view over the beach is lost, the new deck now has a view over the salt pans with its wonderful avian inhabitants and bordered by pristine fynbos. The bed and breakfast was, luckily, left untouched by the storm.

At the beginning of the 2017 we began serving pizzas, which quickly gained popularity due to our emphasis on fresh, quality ingredients. We also made our own bases and tomato sauce, adding extra wholesome goodness to the overall taste. The pizzas were made in front of the customers, which added sensory authenticity to the experience. We’re happy to say that the pizzas will again be a part of our new setup as soon as we have an oven built on the new deck. (Hopefully by the end of February 2018).

We are excited about this new chapter in our lives and that of the business, and hope that our regular customers (and new!) will see this in our ongoing effort to serve delicious and healthy seafood in this special part of the West Coast.

Please note that reservations for the seafood and pizza buffets are a must, as we prepare our food fresh, so we need to know exactly how many customers will attend on a given day.
